Story of Lt. Col Akhter Iqbal

Lieutenant Colonel Md Akhtar Iqbal, BGBMS, afwc, psc, Engineers (retd) have been in multi-dimensional appointments of corps of engineers having full range of engineering field experiences during his service with 14 Engineer Unit of Bangladesh Army as well as in many national level engineering construction projects in home and abroad.

He is a graduate both from Defense Service Command and Staff College and National Defense College at Mirpur Cantonment. He received his bachelor of engineering degree in Civil Engineering from BUET besides being a 1st class graduate from Chittagong University. He obtained Masters in Defense Studies from National University and M. Phil in Security and Defense Studies-Part 1 from BUP. He participated in Strategic Leadership Course under Cranfield University of UK. Mr Iqbal has done CCNA from UNDP-CISCO-BUET Academy. He is a recipient of Border Guard Bangladesh Services Medal (BGBMS) from Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2017 for his extra ordinary services in BGB.

Through extraordinary leadership, Mr. Iqbal directed many significant projects. He directed Hathirjheel Project, Banani Cantonment Flyover Project, Repair of Meghna Bridge damaged connections and Dhaka-Mymensingh National Highway Projects as Deputy DG (Planning & Contract) of Special Works Organization (West), Bangladesh Army, Dhaka. He was Project Director of Shimanto Shamvar Commercial Complex Project, Peelkhana Dhaka and of projects with multi-storied buildings for accommodation of soldiers/families at Bandarban, Sylhet, Lalmonirhat, Khulna, Dhaka, Jaminipara, Khedachara and Satkhira.

He was Garrison Engineer to 100 Officers Mess Complex, Officer’s Quarter, Soldier’s quarter, Multipurpose Soldier’s Accommodation Building. As a Major, Md. Iqbal worked as project officer in Landscaping, Land Development and Drainage Construction of HSIA Project and managed Excavation, Rehabilitation and Renovation of Second World War Relic General Slims Command Post.
He was also Chief Quality Controller for 1200 Asrayon Project of Comilla area while he was a Major. As a Captain, he worked as APO in many projects like- Chimbuk Thanchi Project, Dhighinala- Marishshya Road Project, Panchari Gourangapara Road Project, Baghaihat-Sajek Road Project, Cox’s Bazar — Teknaf Marine Drive Road etc. He had a rare experience of launching 7 x Modified Bailey
bridge including a 200 ft. long suspended bridge between 2000 ft. ridges and about 100 plus ARMCO Culvert construction in the war- devastated Angola.

His excellent contribution as a “overall coordinating officer” for the rescue and removal operation of collapsed 9 storied Spectra Garments factory building at Bipail, Savar in 2005 was praised all over the country. He came in to limelight again during the rescue and repair work of endangered embankment of Jamuna river at Shariotpur in 2007.
